"Alternate" is of course American English, but I won't hold that against anyone.

My vote would be for alternateworlds -- it is more general than alternateages, and is marginally easier to read since it avoids a double vowel in the middle.

There is a new top-level suffix that is free: .co (as opposed to .com), as well as .org. For a British English AlternativeWorlds, only .co is free.

But it is Andy's call!

.co cost almost 30 dollars. .org is just over 10 dollars.

I thought the word "Alternate" came from the Latin word, "Alternare" ? Something to do with Alter meaning "other" and Alternus meaning "by turns".

Just curious

Of course I vaguely remember someone from the UK talking about proper English and when asked about American English, her reply was:

"American English is English with it's sleeves rolled up."

Made me laugh to no end.....

So let me "roll my sleeves up" and check it out. I think I'll go with AlternateWorlds.org (.com is taken and so is .net, .co is too expensive for me right now, besides I want it to be an organization, not a company. .com site is some strange physics thing and .net is some guy's personal photo album).

Once I've registered the domain, I'll get with Nyn.

Okay....

AlternateWorlds.org it is! I just purchased the domain name. I'll get with Nyn on everything else.

I quite like the pre-rendered games, and have a number of non-commercial ones from before Uru for that matter. Like Mylk! So simple yet so fun!

(As for the 'alternative' vs 'alternate' thing, I personally use both, as they have somewhat different nuances. I don't think of it as being from various dialects. ('Alternate' probably works better here, I should think.) And the whole American English vs British English thing is bogus anyway, as there are many dialects in both places which sometimes match a dialect from the other continent better than a more local one. And a person needs to know the words from both anyway, in order to understand people. )

Well to me (and I am by NO means an expert on the English language since I murder it all the time, like just now, hehehehe):

Alter - to change
Alternate - To go back and forth, or move around (like Alternating Current)
Alternative - different outcome or choice

Then there are things like "Alter" where someone just got lazy and doesn't use the "W" in Walter's name.....

The 'H' is not just silent but invisible too? ;)

Back to topic, I spoke to several people yesterday -- in three different worlds! -- about what was happening. They are very interested, and think it a great idea.

That's good Dot!

Nynaveve got the DNS for the domain to point to her server (if you type in the Uru, it will load up a pic of K'veer for right now).

We can now get it set up. If it works right, everyone that is a registered member here will already be registered over there.

It will be a few days before it's all ready to go.

Yeay! I like this :)

Speaking about languages - in swedish it's 'alternera' which means change between two or more objects, behaviors, roles etc. 'Alternative' is the same, 'alter' is only used as 'alter ego' (my alter ego is ametist ;) ). Interesting.

Heh, here's a good one for you:

Alter means to change. Drop the "er" from the word and you get:

"Alt" - Italian for "Stop"
